This
month’s feature CD
(previous
months’ picks)

A Little R&R – Red and Rupert is a CD
I apparently played some harp on – hence I received my complimentary
copy in the mail yesterday. I do vaguely remember the session
too, but I never got to meet either of the protagonists responsible.
So, in the absence of anything we’ve produced, this becomes
my CD of the month. If you suffer from delicate sensibilities,
this is not the album for you, but if you’re looking for some
relief from the terminally serious – i.e. a whole
heap of outrageous and juvenile fun from men who are old enough
to know better, then this comes highly recommended. Ross Ryan
has done a remarkable job of putting it on CD without catching
something nasty

No Thinking – Spectrum
plays the Blues

Sound Vault
SV0430

The first Spectrum Plays The Blues CD since
Spill was released late last century, the first to
be produced from Mike Rudd and Bill Putt’s Accidental Music
Studio, and the first to be distributed by Sound Vault Records,
No Thinking varies the Spill formula only
slightly, adding to the predictable core of blues tunes an
eclectic collection of covers of tunes by Marvin Gaye,
The Beatles, Elvis Presley
and Hank Williams, to name but a few. Most
of the tracks were recorded at Ross Ryan’s GI Recorders and
Pete Dacy’s Secret Sound Studio, with a couple of live favourites
recorded at this year’s Thredbo Blues Festival. Price from

Spill –
Spectrum
plays the Blues

Volcano Records VR002
SPTB’s
next
most
recent offering sees Mike, Bill and Robbo tackle a bunch
of blues’ standards with special guests Colin
Hay
and blues harp maestro Chris Wilson
thrown in. “It should come as no surprise that
Rudd and Putt would be able to come up with such a quality
release – talent will always come out in the end. But here
is an album that will drag in the long-time nostalgia buffs,
the curious and, most importantly, the die-hard blues fans
.”

Living
On A Volcano
Mike Rudd & Bill Putt

Volcano Records VR001

The third most recent of Mike and Bill’s
albums, it marks quite a departure from their previous work.
It’s received glowing reviews and the feedback Mike
and Bill have been getting from Volcano owners is extremely
touching. Featuring lyrics by Mike’s late wife, Helen,
it’s a laid-back, almost ambient album that will hardly
leave your player, especially if you’re the forgetful
type… $25.00 + postage

A
Strange Fantastic Dream – Ariel

Rare Vision RVSN-002

Lovingly re-mastered classic Ariel album
on Spectrum’s own Rare Vision label with bonus track
Red Hot Momma. As the Herald Sun’s Pete Best said
recently; “Ariel was to explore Rudd’s progressive
rock ambitions and this was their extraordinary first step.
Tim Gaze was on board with Rudd’s mate Bill Putt in perhaps
their most powerful combination.”

Rock
& Roll Scars – Ariel
Rare Vision – RVSN-003

Again lovingly re-mastered Ariel album dedicated
to the memory of the late Ariel drummer John Lee, with the
bonus inclusion of the single Yeah Tonight. Some
people think this is the definitive guitar band that Rudd
and Putt had to this point – which is not saying much as it
was the only guitar band they had to this point.
It is true to say that the re-interpretations
of the Spectrum /Murtceps material compare
favourably with the originals, and the superb Abbey Road /
Air Studios sound fairly leaps out of the speakers. $20.00

The
Jellabad Mutant – Ariel
Rare
Vision RVSN-004

The Ariel with Harvey James
and John Lee demo’ed Rudd’s rock
opera, The Jellabad Mutant, at EMI in 1974, only to have
the project shelved. The session has been digitally re-mastered
plus the single tracks I’ll Take You High
and I Can’t Say What I Mean and a Double
J live broadcast of the Mutant medley with Glyn
Mason
and Nigel Macara. With lavish
background notes and nice pictures, this CD is a lost masterpiece
that’s been found again. Hooray! $25.00 + postage

Ghosts:
Post- Terminal Reflection –
Spectrum
/ The Indelible Murtceps –
Raven
Records RVCD-18

A Raven compilation of early Spectrum and Murtceps material
including two versions of I’ll Be Gone, as
well as Make Your Stash,
Esmeralda, We are Indelible
and many more. The
vinyl versions are selling for inordinate money – when
you can find them – and this is not a bad selection
with comprehensive cover notes by the effusive Glenn
A. Baker. $25.00
Golden
Miles – Various
Raven Records RVCD-39

A Raven double CD compilation of Australian Progressive
Rock from 1969-1974. Featuring acts such as Tully, Tamam
Shud, King Harvest, Wild Cherries,
Company Caine, Daddy Cool and, of course, Spectrum, this
collection has been a surprise best seller. Maybe it’s
because we can sell it so cheap. Normally $40.00, for
you $35.00 Please feel free to check
out
the
other artists and tracks on this enormously important
double CD.
Ugly
Things – Various
Raven Records
RVCD-26

Another Raven compilation with loads
of rare tracks from 60’s bands including the Missing
Links, Purple Hearts, Pink Finks, Masters Apprentices,
Mike’s first band, Chants R&B and Bill’s
first band The Lost Souls (this is before Bill had a moustache
even!) make this a very special crappy record. I’ve gone
to a lot of trouble to list all the acts and songs on
this CD, so check
them out
if
you’re interested. Or even if you’re not interested.

Chants
R&B Live 66 CORD-061

Collectable 12″ vinyl on the Corduroy
label featuring Mike’s first band, Chants R&B, absolutely
live at Christchurch’s Stagedoor in 1966. John Stax says
“It is one of the WILDEST, most exciting
LIVE albums I have ever heard.”
That actually
may mean something to some of you – now all you need is
a record player and you’re away! Unfortunately, we don’t
sell record players, but we do know people who
do. If you need a tip on a turntable, give us a bell and
we’ll give you the drum. The record? A trivial, old-fashioned

The
Cutting Edge Of Society – Life As We Know It –
Advantage Australia AA001

Commissioned by Advantage Australia, this song features
the enormous Life As We Know It band with Gerry Hale’s
mandolin, banjo
and fiddle lending a country-ish feel to a thought-provoking
song. Never to be released, it’s a must for collectors
at a disconcertingly cheap $5.00
(I know you’re never going to buy this, even at that price,
so why not just download the mp3?
You’ll get a good talking to for nothing).

Wednesday
Night Live At The Clifton Hill – Various – Clifton
Hill Records CHR-001

Spectrum’s contribution to the Clifton Hill Acoustic extravaganza.
Ironically, Spectrum were as un-unplugged as can be on
the night,
and their performance of the otherwise unreleased Rocket
Girl
is electric in every sense. Other performers
on the CD include the Stovetops, the band sometime Spectrum
keyboardist, Simon Burke, plays in regularly – when he’s
not playing with Something for Kate that is.. All the
acts and tracks are listed, so
check

them out
. This CD sells in the shops for $25.00 but
we can do it for a piffling $20.00
to be sure, to be sure..
Under
The Covers..

(This is actually a fine historical record and coffee
table style BOOK)
Spectrum contemporaries lan McCausland (who designed Spectrum’s
Milesago album cover), Ed Nimmervoll (Go-Set and Juke)
Graeme Webber (photographer) and Steve Malpass (graphic
designer), are all featured in this gorgeous book. Mike
and Bill persuaded them to design the SPILL jacket, and
now are offering the Under the Covers book to their readers.
So here it is – at a few dollars less than recommended
retail even.. $35.00

Live
At St Andrews Hotel – Various
LarsDrinx001

Back in ’98, before we finally decided
to permanently re-adopt the Spectrum monicker, we occasionally
performed as the Indelible Murtceps, and it’s the IM that’s
bashing out the We Are Indelible theme tune and
I Just Wanna Make Love To You on this mostly
bluesy collection of songs. Recorded by Rob Harwood at
the venerable St Andrews pub, it’s a vibey live CD, of
which I have only a couple in stock. Get in touch with
Rob,
or by buy direct from the St Andrews pub, or get in touch
