Coffee
– the never-ending search for the perfect cup
2.7.05 –
Ironically, I’ve had to cut down
on my coffee consumption lately. While I’m generally of a delicate
disposition anyway, I thought a cup a day was playing it safe,
but, not only am I delicate, I also lean towards being acidic,
(funny that), and I’ve discovered that even one macchiato a
day is too much. Still, I enjoy them when I can, and I wanted
to tell you about a place where I can not only buy a good coffee,
but also indulge another passion I’ve so far failed to bore
you with. Over the past few years I’ve not only become partial
to coffee and pinots, but I also enjoy partaking of fine olive
oils. Happily there’s an establishment just down the road in
Hawthorn that caters both coffee and olive oil fetishists. Called
Oliv (pic 3) it boasts as fine a range of oils as you’ll
find outside of Carlton and makes a satisfactory cup
of coffee (pic 2). My current favourite olive oil is
a Sicilian one made on the slopes of Monte Lauro close to Mt
Etna called Mongibello – and I have to say, this year’s crop
is the best ever. Oliv website
